Whatever Wednesday #1: Skateboard
Welcome to the first Whatever Wednesday, this is going to be a series that will focus on the miscellaneous side of things, it may or may not have a lot to do with physical culture, the outdoors, DIY or the usual things that are written about here. It might be an article or a product review or… Whatever. That being said, let’s get into Whatever Wednesday #1: Skateboard.
When I was younger, I spent a lot of time on my skateboard. Whenever the streets weren’t covered with snow, I was all over town on my skateboard. When the streets were covered with snow, I was in my garage utilizing the little bit of space that existed.
It has been two decades since I rode a skateboard with any sort of regularity or seriousness, when my son expressed interest in starting to skateboard, I pulled out my old board to let him try it out. Once he should me that he wanted to continue to pursue it, I got him his own. We went to the skatepark together and pushed around on our boards, it was a nice moment to share with him. It gets us outside, let’s us exercise in a fun way and provides us a way to spend time together.
After a couple of months of going to the skatepark a couple of times a week together, I decided to get a new board. It’s exciting and I found myself in a wave of nostalgia while shopping around for a new board, the familiar brands and graphics brought me back to times of skating all day on the weekends and getting lost into a skateboard magazine in study hall. Check out an inexpensive complete from CCS here https://amzn.to/48j3iol and of course, stay safe while doing so https://amzn.to/3UL23eg, or better yet, support your local skate shop.
I think it is important as we grow older to revisit the things that brought us joy in our youth. As the George Bernard Shaw quote goes, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”
I hope this motivates you to revisit something you enjoyed in your youth, to have some fun and hopefully share it with someone important to you.
